Humpday Listday: It Isn't Wednesday.

I know it isn't Wednesday, but it's been so long since I've posted a list, I decided it didn't matter what day it was. This list is a two-parter.

Things that are ruining my day:

1. Burned my hand on my curling iron this morning. All 5 fingers and a little palm. Big Ouch.
2. Had a fender-bender on Friday in the rain. So I don't have a car until mine gets fixed.
3. It's still raining. The proof is coming in through the roof of the shop where I work and landing in a bucket.
4. I stepped in a puddle in my new shoes (that have the cutest cut-outs that let the water in) when I went out to the curb to get the lunch that the Hubs so kindly brought me to work.
   
5. Also, my hair got soaked and now all the hard work I put in with the offending curling iron is ruined.
   
6. I'm working all day at the shop and can't leave. Even though there hasn't been one. single. customer. All day.
   

Things that are making me smile anyway:

1. I'm editing engagement photos for Jessica & Justin and there are quite a few that make me get all mushy inside and go "Aaawwwwwww!"
2. I have a dinner date with Jessica tonight!
   
3. Cranking up the radio at the shop since there are no customers. :)
4. Getting emails that people are "liking" my mixes on 8tracks.
5. Having the will-power to get the fruit-cup as a side at Chick-fil-a instead of fries.
6. Watching City Slickers and City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold this weekend.

Last Year

It's that time. Time to review my 25 before 26 list one last time.
Let's see how much of my list from last year I got accomplished before I post this year's.....

1. Buy a sofa. YES!
   
2. Make a headboard. No, but we did paint the bedroom and hang my embroidered heart above it.
   
3. Open an Etsy shop. No..... it's going to happen, but I'm not going to put it on a list. It'll happen when it happens.
   
4. Start a record collection (and buy a record player). Oh yeah! We have tons of records now!
   
5. Finish LDQ & Arrows quilts (and make another!) No.... I'm putting this on list for next year again.
   
6. Find a great rug for the living room. Well, no... but right now, our livingroom doesn't really need it.
   
7. Camping on Cumberland. Take a picture of a wild horse. Sigh.... another no.
   
8. Make health a priority. Yes. Did this.... and I'm pretty proud of my progress.
   
9. Bake a Red Velvet cake. I never did this. I did, however, get a copy of my Grandmother's recipe.
   
10. Make a 17 song mixtape playlist for every month. YES! Well, every month but October, but I'm calling it a win anyway!
    
11. Write a letter every week. Ha. No.
    
12. Read 20 books that aren't Twilight or Harry Potter. I read 10 Sookie Stackhouse novels... and one or two others. Does that count?
    
13. Sew something wearable. I did... I'm not crazy about the dress I made, but I made it anyway.
    
14. Fill the pages of a sketchbook. Aaaaaalmost.
    
15. Mail 5 care packages for no reason. Yep.
    
16. Go to a state I've never been to. I'd never been to Virginia. Now I have.
    
17. Make a painting and hang it in our apartment. Yes. Although it's not up right now due to Christmas decorations.
    
18. Design a website. No.... redesigned my blog a few times, but no website as such.
    
19. Watch 5 movies in theaters. Yes. I even went to a movie by myself once.
    
20. Get a really great haircut. I did, and I loved my bob. But now it's time for another change.
    
21. Drink a bottle of wine worth more than $20. Yep. Well.... we spent $75 at the wine store.... I say that counts.
    
22. give at least 1 trash bag of clothes to Goodwill. I think I gave 3 or 4.
    
23. Buy Chris something he'd never buy for himself. I did. But it's his Christmas present, so shhhhhhh!!
    
24. Eat a whole lobster. No.... had a few claws about a month back, though.
    
25. Make business cards for myself. Yes, but I'm thinking of making new ones.

Humpday Listday: Excited For Fall

Here are 9 things that make me excited for fall. This list may seem like it's a bit late, but the first item on the list should clarify why it doesn't feel like fall here yet.

1. Cooler weather. It's still getting into the mid 80's here in good ol' Statesboro. I'd like for that to stop soon.
2. Going to the Fair and eating pancakes 'n' sausage, deep fried Twinkies, and cotton candy 'till I barf. (Heads up, the fair is in town this week, so this is probably happening tonight.)
3. Making a new wreath for our front door that borrows heavily from this very pretty one.
4. Young Frankenstein and Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween. It's a tradition.
5. V For Vendetta on November 5th. It's also a tradition. But this one has "V" cookies.
6. PUMPKIN PIE!
7. Breaking out the scarves that have been imprisoned in my closet and/or bottom dresser drawer for 9 months.
8. Thanksgiving with the fam. Mostly for my grandma's famously delicious Pumpkin Roll.
9. *whispering in a bad English accent* Harrrrry Potterrrrrrrrr! Is there a geek alive that isn't excited about Deathly Hallows?? Probably not.

10 things I did while on my little blog-break:

1. Read all the Sookie Stackhouse books.
2. Bought a new pair of boots.
3. Got really sick and ended up in the emergency room twice in 24 hours.
4. Got better.
5. Started eating a banana every morning... because I was tired of yogurt.
6. Had satellite installed at the apartment... with DVR! Happy!
7. Went to a funeral in North Carolina. Sad.
8. Realized that organizing the toys at the shop where I work is a fruitless effort.
9. Watched the Bourne Trilogy for the first time.
10. Played The Black Keys' album Brothers approximately 1 thousand times.

Humpday Listday: Someday House

Chris and I often talk about our "Someday House." You know, the house you aspire to live in someday. The house where you'll raise your kids and friends will come to stay for long weekends. Where your most treasured possessions will all have places of their own. The house you'll always think of as home.

Right now, we live in the very small, very old, very cheap 2 bedroom apartment that Chris has lived in since before we got married. We decided that as long as we live in Statesboro, we'll stay in this apartment and save money for when we have a "real" place. We're always trying to make our current place better, though. We've painted the kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom and bathroom. Those little touches make it not-so-bad for right now. But we're constantly dreaming of our "someday house."

Here is my "Someday House" wishlist. I realize that it would have to be a pretty spectacular house to have all of these things, but can't a girl dream?

1. Big, glorious, floor-to-ceiling windows in at least one room.
2. Beautiful hardwood floors throughout, with soft, luxurious rugs strategically placed for preventing cold tootsies.
3. A kitchen with a big farmhouse-style table. Big enough for at least 10 people.
   
4. Speaking of the kitchen, I'd like tons of storage, and more counter space than anyone could possibly ever need.
5. A turret with a roof that looks like an upside down ice cream cone.
6. A secret room or hidden passageway. I've always wanted one of those.
7. A backyard with grass as soft as carpet where you'd never need shoes.
   
8. A little outbuilding in the backyard (with the soft grass) that looks like a tiny house that I would use as a studio. Must have hanging baskets of colorful flowers.
   
9. An antique claw-foot tub.
10. Hummingbird feeders outside. With hummingbirds.
11. A big, strong oak tree with a tire swing and tree house for the someday-kids.
12. A Weasley-sized fireplace. (You know, one big enough for the whole Weasley family to fit in to travel on the Floo Network.)
13. A wraparound front porch. With rocking chairs.
    
14. A red front door.

Humpday Listday: I Want...

It's Wednesday and I owe you a list.

Here are 10 things I want right now:

1. a nap
2. a pair of TOMS wrap boots.
3. an iPad. I just can't help it. They look so cool. Maybe when the second gen comes out....
4. for it to be fall already! We've had a heat advisory every day this week.
5. to miraculously not have to work this Saturday. All the girls on my Mom's side of the fam are getting together and I can't go! No fair!
6. better cuticles. I bite mine and they look horrid right now.
7. a shower. I got my hair trimmed yesterday afternoon and didn't wash it this morning. My stylist loads me up with gunk every time!
8. my to-do list to take care of itself.
9. to go watch old episodes of Daria in bed.
10. my cat to curl up next to me while I watch Daria in bed.

Oh well. All my lists can't be winners.

Humpday Listday: Children's Books

Happy Wednesday!

While it will probably be a long, long time before I actually get to do it, here are 10 books I loved as a kid and plan on reading to my future kids.

1. The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis. They're the only books I really remember my Mom reading to me as a kid, and I've always loved them. They're classic and so incredibly wonderful. I remember thinking that maybe, just maybe there was a secret land at the back of my closet.
2. The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss. This was my favorite "over and over and over again" bedtime story. My grandmother read it to me almost every night I stayed at her house. This book made being 'green' cool when green was just a color. I remember desperately wanting to save the Truffula Trees. I didn't realize what an important lesson it imparted until I was older, I just really thought those trees were the prettiest things I'd ever seen and the Lorax sounded like a pretty smart guy, too.

3. Where The Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. I was painfully shy and very quiet as a kid, so I didn't really understand Max or exactly what a wild rumpus entailed. But I loved the book anyway. Didn't we all? (And I totally loved the movie, too.)


4. Peter Pan, by J.M. Barrie. It's probably the most beloved children's book of all time. And what's so amazing about it is that it's just as wonderful as an adult. Of course I love Peter Pan. With pirates and redskins and fairies and flying, really, who doesn't?


5. Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson. I remember my teacher crying as she read the very sad part of this book aloud to our 4th grade gifted class. I don't think I'd ever seen a teacher cry before... or since.


6. D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. I still have a copy of this book on my bookshelf at home. It's a very simplified version of the very complex Greek Myths, but it got me interested nonetheless. And I still look at it every now and then if I need a refresher.


7. The Complete Tales of Winnie-The-Pooh by A.A. Milne. I was an avid Winnie-the-Pooh fan as a child. Lydia and I would get up extra early on Saturday mornings (when we'd spent the night at one another's house) and watch Pooh. I can only hope my someday-kids love Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, Christopher Robin and the rest of the gang as much as we did.

8. Because a Little Bug Went Ka-Choo! by Rosetta Stone. Yes, I do believe that is the author's real name. This was another bedtime favorite. It's a slightly lesser-known kid's book, but I really loved it. Especially when whoever was reading it to me (usually my grandma) fake-sneezed. That really got some chuckles out of 4-year-old me.


9. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. I think I had both the regular and pop-up versions of this book. To this day, I think the illustrations are some of the most beautiful in the world.


10. A Light in the Attic, by Shel Silverstein. I looooved this book. And you know what? You probably did, too.

6. Glamour of Glitter Dress from ModCloth. That flower! So pretty!

7. The prettiest egg plate you ever did see! I have a weakness for egg plates. This one from Anthro takes the cake!

Humpday Listday: The Lipton 10

If you've ever seen Inside the Actor's Studio with James Lipton, you know all about "the questionnaire." If not, you should really go watch it. It's absolutely fascinating. At the end of every interview, Mr. Lipton asks the same 10 questions to the interviewee. Originated by French TV personality Bernard Pivot, the questionnaire is my very favorite part of the show. And to me, the most interesting questions the actors answer the whole time.

I've actually posted my answers on my blog before, but it's been such a long time that I thought I'd do it all over again. Here are my answers to James Lipton's 10 questions:

1. What is your favorite word?
Rambunctious. I love the word, how it sounds, what it means, and how it feels to be rambunctious.
2. What is your least favorite word?
Stupid, when used to reference a person. Or quiver. Quiver gives me the heebie-jeebies.
3. What turns you on?
Honest-to-goodness laughter. Not a fake chuckle, but really hearty, from-the-the gut, uncontrollable laughter. The kind where your sides hurt and you pee yourself a little. It's the best thing in the world.
4. What turns you off?
Snobbery. Any and all kinds. Yuck.
5. What sound or noise do you love?
A harmonica being played well. Nothing better than a song with good harmonica.
6. What sound or noise do you hate?
God, I hate my alarm clock. And snoring. Basically, anything that keeps me from sleeping.

Shit, in any variety.

A baker. Making pretty sweets all day and going home smelling like sugar would be wonderful.

Humpday Listday: Too Hot

The Mister and I live in South Georgia. If you've ever been to South Georgia, you'll know why it's so miserable in the summer, here. It's like being in a sauna fully clothed from May to September.

Here are 6 things it's just too damn hot to do in Statesboro in the summer:

1. Cook any slow-simmering stews or hour-in-the-oven cakes. Pot roast? No thanks. I'll just have a sandwich.
2. Have leather or vinyl seats in your car. If you have them, a well placed towel will be your best friend.
3. Blow-dry your hair. Adding even MORE hot air is just asking for a heat stroke.
4. Wear socks. Flip flops, sandals, and slide-on shoes only, please! My feet need to breathe!
5. Crochet. I try and try every summer to get ahead on crocheting for the fall, but it's just too hot. It's like wearing a sweater on your fingers. And yarn doesn't react too well to sweat. Eww.
6. Be outside for more than 5 minutes at a time. Seriously, it's soooooo hot here. And it'll only get worse until August.

Humpday Listday: Chris' Birthday Edition!

Today is the Mister's Birthday and I thought I'd share a few reasons I'm glad he was born!

1. He helps me build forts out of the couch cushions and blankets in the middle of the bedroom floor when I ask.
2. He's a much more efficient shopper than I am. Without Chris, I'd spend hours in the grocery store aimlessly wandering around until I've spent $200.
3. He likes to drive around and explore just as much as I do. Maybe even more.
4. My skepticism is balanced out by his amazing ability to be eternally optimistic.
5. I'm not computer illiterate; actually, I'm pretty proficient. But whenever I can't figure out what's wrong with the computer, he always can.
6. By marrying him, I gained a whole new (really awesome) family.
7. He makes me laugh at the most unexpected times.
8. He gave me a kitty for my birthday.
9. He has more faith in me than I do in myself.
10. Because he knows how crazy I am and loves me in spite of (or maybe because of) it.

Humpday Listday: Guilty Pleasures

You knew this list had to be coming at some point. Here are some things I love, that I feel at least 20% guilty about.

1. Sonic drinks at happy hour.
Every day I get off work at 2:00 and I drive past Sonic on my way home. Cherry Orange Sprite, Grape Sprite, and Cherry Cokes call my name as I pass. I think, "It's after 2:00. Happy Hour. Half price. I've got enough change in the ashtray in my car....." It's a terrible habit that I'm trying to break.

2. Nail polish. Which I told you all about yesterday. Serious problem.

3. Reading or watching TV in bed. Our bed is one of my favorite places. It's soft and cozy and the comforter if fluffy. Sundays in bed are my favorite.

4. Take-out Chinese food! Sweet and Sour chicken is my weakness! There's a little place between the grocery store and Papa John's pizza that has the best Chinese in town and we loooove it.

5. Haagen-Dazs' Vanilla Honey Bee ice cream. No chunks of cookies or candy or chocolate or fruit or anything else (although I do like those things). Just pure, perfect vanilla ice cream flavored ever so lightly with honey. It's absolutely the most perfect ice cream ever and a rare treat when I get it.
6. Goodbird's. Next to the Wal-Mart on Northside Drive in Statesboro, GA there's a little drive-thru that serves the absolute best chicken tenders and vinegar fries. They have the best yeast rolls and the best sweet iced tea. It'll clog your arteries and make you chunky, but if you're ever in Statesboro, you should swing through. Your mouth won't be sorry.

7. Yarn! I love yarn! And it really shouldn't be a "guilty" pleasure... but my collection has grown to massive proportions. I have to keep some of it our in our storage closet. It's bad. And I have yarn that's more than 6 or 7 years old... that I've never used. I keep saying that someday I'll make a scrap afghan with just bits and pieces of all my yarn in it. Someday...

8. Chapstick. Lipgloss. Lip Balm. Whatever you call it, I'm addicted to it. I'm the girl who picks up the junk they sell at the check-out line at the grocery store. Burt's Bees, Carmex, Blistex. I have it all. But you wanna know a secret? The best lip stuff ever is Vicks VapoRub. Yep, that stuff you rub on your chest when you're sick. My new sister Emily let me in on that one and I use it all the time. It makes your lips tingly and keeps your sinuses open. And it moisturizes like crazy! It really works!

9. E!
The Soup, Chelsea Lately, The Girls Next Door (before the big break-up), and all those other ridiculous shows? Yeah. I find myself watching E! when nobody's looking. Especially late at night. I can't help it!

10. Twilight. *sigh* Oh lord, do I love me some Twilight. This is probably the biggest one on the list. It's ridiculous, really, as I am not 13 years old. I just can't help it. Please don't judge me.... or my Edward action figure.

And yeah, I already have a date with Jessica planned to see the midnight showing of Eclipse when it comes out.

Every girl has Girl Crushes. Every guy has Man Crushes. It's a fact of life. These are my celebrity Girl Crushes. And I'm sticking to live ones for this... Ms. Hepburn (both of them) will just have to sit this one out.

1. Jenny Lewis. Oh, Jenny. I want her hair. I want her voice. I want her sly smile. I want her way with words. She's just perfect, isn't she?

5. Summer Glau. She kicked Reaver butt as River in Firefly, and she's been a Terminator, for goodness sake! At this point, I'd watch her in anything!

6. Kate Moennig. You watch her in The L Word as Shane for 6 seasons and just try not to love her. It's impossible!

7. Zooey & Emily Deschanel. They're sisters, so I'm counting them as one. Basically, the prettiest siblings around.

8. Felicia Day. Penny from Dr. Horrible, Queen of Twitter, and writer/creator/star of The Guild. And a redhead! Best. Geek. Ever.

9. Kristen Bell. She's tiny, blonde, and has a wit so sharp it could cut through steel. And she's got mad detective skills in Veronica Mars.

10. Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck. I'm pretty sure she could kick your ass. And everybody else's.

Humpday Listday: Things I'm Excited To Do When I Get Home

While we're loving D.C. and being 'away from it all' for a week, I'll admit I'm getting a little homesick. Here are some things I'm excited to do when I get home.

1. See my cat! Boarding her for a week has been difficult for me. The first night here, I cried a little because I missed her so much. Silly, I know.

2. Sleep in my own bed. The Residence Inn doesn't have the worst bed ever, but I really miss our bed. It's so soft and squishy and it has our fluffy pillows and our non-scratchy sheets.

3. Bake something. We have a kitchen in our hotel room, but there's no oven. I miss baking things. I'm pretty sure biscuits are first on the list.

4. Drink coffee out of the Pantone coffee mug I bought at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It's turquoise and I love it already.5. Sit at my computer for several hours. We have a laptop here, but all of my stuff is on the desktop at home. I haven't been following blogs very closely, and I really miss that. I feel like that's part of my normal routine and I haven't had that this week.

6. Not walk. I am excited to NOT walk for a while. I can't even begin to imagine how many miles we've walked this week.

7. Park near my destination. This goes along with NOT walking. I'd like to drive my car. And park near where I'm going. DC's Metro is great. It really is, but I'm a Georgia girl from a town whose only form of public transportation is the school bus. I want to park near my destination.

8. Craft. I haven't crafted since before we left. I have so many projects on my list and my fingers are just itching to get started.

That's it. I'm stopping at 8. I'm too tired and my feet hurt too much to do any more.

Humpday Listday: Random Facts

Today's list is poorly thought out and hastily put together. I apologize. Profusely.

10 Random Facts about me:

1. I am highly allergic to feathers. Most kinds. Definitely goose, chicken and duck down. It makes shopping for comforters and throw pillows absolute hell. And hotels. We always have to call hotels to make sure there aren't feather pillows. It's ridiculously inconvenient.

2. Every now and then, I loooove Brussels sprouts. It comes and goes, but sometimes, I just get a craving.

3. One of my secrets is in this book: My postcard is also on the back cover. And is one of the Amazon preview images. And I didn't know anything about it until I was reading the book in a store two and a half years after it came out. (Ask me which and I'll tell you, if you don't already know.)

4. I am 25 years old and have never been on an airplane. We rarely took big trips when I was a kid and when we did, we drove. An opportunity just never presented itself. This Saturday, Chris and I are leaving for Washington, D.C. for a week... we're flying.

5. I like to make a game out of figuring out which celebrity's voice is in a commercial. I'm pretty good at it.

6. Once upon a time, I was a huge band geek. I played tenor saxophone (not very well, but I tried) and was Drum Major my senior year. Most of my high school memories are shaped around football games and band practice.

7. My favorite cake is a tie between Red Velvet (Granny's Red Velvet at Christmas is the best) and my Aunt Kathie's birthday cake. She makes the best birthday cakes. They taste just like a birthday cake should.

8. Most days, my "Not a Paper Cup" is filled with water instead of tea or coffee.


9. I really am a huge geek. I have seen every single episode of Stargate SG-1. And Stargate Atlantis. Don't judge me.
10. My sole reason for wanting to learn how to knit is so that I can knit some socks for a very special someone who loves socks. But at this rate, We'll be in our 80's by the time it actually happens.

Aaaaand that's my list! Next week, we'll be on vacation in D.C. so my list will probably be themed!
