Lydia came over last week and asked me to help her make a hat. This started a crocheting frenzy. I hadn't done any since I moved out of my beloved Marvin House, but now I can't stop. Hats and scarves, oh my!
My gold hat. I call it my elsie hat. Lydia knows why. This one I'm keeping for myself.

This one I did not make. Lydia brought it from home. One of our Great Aunts made it for Lydia's mom (my aunt) a looong time ago. I'm obsessed. Must. Learn. How. To. Make. Diamonds. And here's me wearing the hat and the scarf that matches. Beautiful, I know.

Our V for Vendetta night was so much fun. I wish I'd taken pictures of us making cookies. But here's a quick snap of the finished product. Note that all the cookies here are normal looking. I didn't include the ones that we were silly with (like the Mr. Potato Head-shaped smiley face).
I thought I'd also share my favorite little corner of my apartment right now. My sewing machine now has a permanent home for the first time. I can whip up something crafty any time I want! Also, I finally (more than 3 months after moving) got my Buffy action figures up. When Jessica was in town a few weeks ago, she helped me organize them. I know it's silly, but it's so much fun to do. Their tiny little accessories are just so adorable. And look at the lights my Mom picked up from Target! I'm a little bit in love with them.

Let me start by saying that this will be the one and only time in the next four years that I will talk politics on this thing. I promise.
I voted opposite most of my family and a good portion of my friends. Someone even told me they were disappointed in me. Disappointed? How can you be disappointed that I have a mind of my own? That I am intelligent enough to make my own decisions based on my personal beliefs?
We are lucky enough to live in a place where we can vote for whomever we like, whether our reasons are valid or convoluted, whether our family and friends agree or not. Everybody thinks their way of thinking is the right way. We can't all be right. But we can be well informed. We can do our homework. We can judge candidates based on facts, not on speculation or what someone else told you was true.
Make no mistake about it; I did not vote the way I did because I was misled, misguided, or misinformed. I voted the way I did because I believe we need change, that we need someone that will work to turn our country around and put us in the right direction again.
There are few people that I talk politics with. There are even fewer that I can talk to that have views differing from my own and don't try to change my opinion or call me stupid (thank you Jessica!). I learned a great lesson from Linus in It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

I have long been a proponent of the Linus philosophy..... of "Keep your mouth shut, Katie!" I don't pick fights. I don't push my views on others. I smile politely. I don't disagree. But when it comes to my vote... I will not let someone else decide for me. I will make my own choice. And when you ask me who I voted for, and you don't like the answer, it's your problem.
I am more proud of my country tonight than I have been in a long time. I can feel the wind changing for the better and it feels so good.
I watched The Darjeeling Limited last night and was so pleasantly surprised. I liked it way more than I thought I would. It was quirky and understated and just fascinating to watch. I think I love Jason Schwartzman just a little bit. Go watch it... now.
But before you do, you should watch the sort-of-prequel short film Hotel Chevalier. You don't have to watch it to get the movie, but it adds a bit of insight into one of the characters.

I have found the perfect fall music. I blogged a bit about Jenny Lewis a while back. She has quickly become one of my favorites... and she is how I found the album I'm currently playing NONSTOP. You see, Jenny Lewis did an album with The Watson Twins, which I absolutely love. Jenny Lewis is good enough on her own, but the Watson Twins singing backup is just phenomenal. So, I decided to look into The Watson Twins a bit more and came across their album, Fire Songs and fell head over heels in love. It is absolutely the perfect music for fall. Remember that song by The Cure, Just Like Heaven? They cover it in this album and it is so incredibly divine. If my iPod were a person and had feelings, it would be sick of that song by now. I seriously play it every time I get on the bus to go to campus. Anyway, here's a sample of both CD's. Get one. Or both.
Makin' Stuff:
Yay! I made this today for my Long Distance Quilt. Found the pattern online... though I don't remember where. I love the contrast of the bold red with the icy blue. I think this is a favorite color combination.
I'm quite pleased at how quickly I'm making things for the quilt. I love that satisfied feeling I get when I slip one into the mailbox. This is shaping up to be a really fun project.
Okay people. Let's talk about something serious for a moment...
There is a very important thing you should do this week. You know it. I know it. If you don't do it, you should feel ashamed.
Wait.... what's that? You don't know what I'm talking about? I'll give you a hint. It starts with a V. That's right.

That's right. It's that time of year to again "Remember, remember, the 5th of November..." Lydia and I will be celebrating by watching the movie and marveling at the awesomeness (sarcasm) of Natalie Portman's British accent. There will probably be cookies, too.

Well, technically it's 12:03 as I'm typing this, therefore it is no longer Halloween. So... Happy November 1! While I, myself did not make anything crafty this year, Lydia did. For her first embroidery project, she made a Halloween sampler. It's so cute I just couldn't resist posting a picture here. Sorry, Lydia!

I'm sort of in love with the witch feet. So adorable. And the broom. And the tree... and all of it.
Lydia and I had some Jiffy Pop, made haystacks (chow mein noodles covered in melted butterscotch morsels), and watched Young Frankenstien (a Halloween tradition of mine) last night. It was a nice quiet Halloween. Just what I needed.
Even though I didn't make anything spooky, I did finish this while we were watching the movie: It will be part of my "Long Distance Quilt." Have I mentioned that yet? I'm making a quilt with my Grandma through the mail. I'm sending embroidered pieces, embroidered covered buttons and scraps of fabric to my Mamaw through the mail. When we have enough (a loooong time from now), she's going to help me assemble them into a scrap quilt. I love the idea that even though I can't see her that often, I feel like we're making something together. It really is that little things in life......
Chris and I went to a wedding last weekend (one of my old roommates got married) that was on St. Simons at Epworth. It was exciting for three reasons: 1. (Obviously) I got to see one of my friends get hitched! 2. I got to spend time with Callie who was also there. 3. We had the opportunity to see how well Epworth functions for a wedding, since we are having ours there. Wait, have I mentioned that? As of right now, we're getting married on October 3 of next year at Epworth. (SO excited). It really does function well for a wedding. It was probably the prettiest wedding I've been to. The weather was perfect, the music was incredible, and it was just all-around lovely.
Also, while we were in Belk picking up a gift for the happy couple, I (of course) was browsing to get ideas for what we might register for. We have already decided that traditional is just not us.... we're not registering for fine china. We decided take the practical route and go for nice everyday dishes instead. BUT, then I saw something that made me rethink all that. Since our wedding is in the fall, and the perfect time for buying Christmas dishes, we might just register for Christmas china. Aren't these gorgeous? That little red cardinal is calling my name. They're actually Paula Deen's ("Hey, y'all!") new line of Christmas dinnerware called "Home for the Holidays." This pitcher is tugging on my heartstrings... hard. I would love to lick a yummy Christmas dinner off of those beautiful hand painted dishes for mine and Chris' first Christmas. I can't wait to zap them with that little registering-pointy-gun scanner thing.
My mom is coming to visit me (YAY!) tomorrow, so I must go sleep so that I can get up and do the final bit of tidying before she gets here.
